Welcome

St. Nicholas Episcopal Church of Kapolei Hawaii has held "Covenant Group" meetings for about 10 years. These groups meet weekly for fellowship, prayer and reflection on the readings and the sermon from the previous week. This blog is an attempt to offer the prayer and reflection as an on-going basis. The challenges of schedules and more prevent many members from participating in our groups, perhaps this will allow for additional participation. I will post readings and questions - please answer the questions and contribute as you're comfortable in the comment sections. Blessings

Book - Treasurers

BOOK – Luke 12:13-21
Jesus warns against being focused on material things.

1.             Why do you think the person asked Jesus to help him settle his family dispute?
2.             How did he help this man?

3.             What treasures are you storing up for yourself?

Luke 12:13-21

Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." But he said to him, "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?" And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, `What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' Then he said, `I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, `Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, `You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God."

  1. 1. I believe it was common to ask a Rabbi to help settle a dispute. Their religion was based on how they followed the "Law" and the Rabbi helped to define that law.

    2. Jesus helps the man gain perspective. Boom! Jesus is good at that. I believe Jesus still helps us with this.

    3. My wife wisely encouraged me to keep a file of accomplishments. Certificates, letters from people, thank you cards etc. When times are tough those can lift my spirits. One week at church I shared that I had been having a hard week and there were 2 items in the mail that helped to turn things around, they were letters (and a book), not a check . . . those are nice too though.
