Welcome

St. Nicholas Episcopal Church of Kapolei Hawaii has held "Covenant Group" meetings for about 10 years. These groups meet weekly for fellowship, prayer and reflection on the readings and the sermon from the previous week. This blog is an attempt to offer the prayer and reflection as an on-going basis. The challenges of schedules and more prevent many members from participating in our groups, perhaps this will allow for additional participation. I will post readings and questions - please answer the questions and contribute as you're comfortable in the comment sections. Blessings

The Took

If we are truly followers of Christ, we should be out there helping others to find Christ..
  1. Have you ever seen someone as transformed as the man in this passage? How did you feel about that transformation – e.g. did you believe it, did it frighten you, did it convert you...?

  2. Do you believe that you can have this transformative effect on someone? Why or why not?

  3. Can you take the few minutes at every opportunity to look for that moment to share about the transforming power of Jesus with someone else? Do you know what you will say?

The Book - Luke 8:26-39

Luke 8:26-39

26Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me”— 29for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) 30Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. 31They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. 32Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. 35Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 36Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39“Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him.

or if you prefer another translation - http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+8%3A26-39&version=NIV

Jesus commands a legion of demons out of one man.
  1. Why do you think the possessed man met Jesus as soon as he landed on shore?

  2. What do you take from the fact that Jesus listened to the pleas of the demons
and allowed them to enter the pigs and not send them back into the abyss?

  3. Christ tells the healed man to spread the word of his healing. In most other
stories he tells the healed to keep quiet. Why the change?

The Look for the week

This week we look at the transformative power of Jesus, especially in Luke 8:26-39. We'll look closer at the "book" soon, but first . . .

To transform a whole nation seems like a crazy undertaking for just one person, but there have been instances where exactly that has happened.

1. What are some examples you can think of where one person changed a nation or their community?

2. Do you think that person deliberately set about to transform his/her community or was that an accidental byproduct of their actions?

3. Is there anything you feel so strongly about that perhaps one day you could transform your community over that issue?
