Welcome

St. Nicholas Episcopal Church of Kapolei Hawaii has held "Covenant Group" meetings for about 10 years. These groups meet weekly for fellowship, prayer and reflection on the readings and the sermon from the previous week. This blog is an attempt to offer the prayer and reflection as an on-going basis. The challenges of schedules and more prevent many members from participating in our groups, perhaps this will allow for additional participation. I will post readings and questions - please answer the questions and contribute as you're comfortable in the comment sections. Blessings

The Look for the week

This week we look at the transformative power of Jesus, especially in Luke 8:26-39. We'll look closer at the "book" soon, but first . . .

To transform a whole nation seems like a crazy undertaking for just one person, but there have been instances where exactly that has happened.

1. What are some examples you can think of where one person changed a nation or their community?

2. Do you think that person deliberately set about to transform his/her community or was that an accidental byproduct of their actions?

3. Is there anything you feel so strongly about that perhaps one day you could transform your community over that issue?

  1. Rosa Parks! And no, she didn't have an intentionality or an 'agenda' - i think she was just sick and tired of the different rules. As to the third - hmm, gotta ponder on that one - I felt very strongly about infertility at the time we were going thru it, so much so that I spent quite a bit of time up at the legislature trying to enact stronger insurance coverage laws and ensuring the laws we did have weren't going to get yanked.....

  2. Great example Dot! A few people come to mind for me, Martin Luther King Jr may top the list. In his case I do think it is something he set out to do deliberately. Although, in some sense of God-driven justice he may not have been able to stop himself too.

I'm passionate about several issues, some of them are more global, like food and clean water for everyone (I know these are local needs too, to some extent). #3 is certainly something to pray on too.

  3. I just was reading an article about President Obama's respect for Nelson Mandela and found this quote which is pertinent to your discussion:
    Obama is naming his heros.
“Internationally, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi,” Mr. Obama said. “I always am interested in leaders who are able to bring about transformative change without resort to violence, but rather changing people’s minds and people’s hearts.”
