Welcome

St. Nicholas Episcopal Church of Kapolei Hawaii has held "Covenant Group" meetings for about 10 years. These groups meet weekly for fellowship, prayer and reflection on the readings and the sermon from the previous week. This blog is an attempt to offer the prayer and reflection as an on-going basis. The challenges of schedules and more prevent many members from participating in our groups, perhaps this will allow for additional participation. I will post readings and questions - please answer the questions and contribute as you're comfortable in the comment sections. Blessings

Book - Making time to listen


BOOK – Luke 10:38-42
Jesus provides another surprising answer, what do we learn from his answer . . .
  1. What assumptions do you hold in this story?
  2. Do you relate most to Mary or Martha? Why?
  3. What is the better part that Mary has chosen? 
    Luke 10:38-42
    As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

    I think for a long time I've assumed that Mary was younger . . . lived with Martha . . .and was relatively lazy, at least compared to Martha. I think some of the assumptions come from my listening to parables where Jesus uses stereotypical characters (not specific persons) to carry on to make a point. That is why I tried to challenge our assumptions in my sermon this week. Mary may have been awesome. Martha may have been a spaz. In some sense I guess it doesn't matter, Mary chose well and it wasn't taken from her.

    I relate to both characters, but have been compared to Mary more recently by others - maybe that's why I defended her ;)

    The "better part"? Jesus. Always choose Jesus. I do think sitting at his feet was even more important than the meal that they'd invited him in for . .

    1. I assume that Martha was a hard worker.

    2. Martha. Some of the work or things that I do, I try to do for God, yet sometimes it may keep me from being with God.

    3. Being with Jesus.

    I love/hate this passage - I so relate to Martha and so wish that I were a Mary - and of course realize that I can EASILY be a Mary if I would just STOP for a few minutes, breathe and revel in God's creation. And the ONLY thing stopping me from doing that is.....ME!
